Victorian Terraced House, Morley

This stone through terrace occupies a position at the end of a row of back-to-back houses. The owners wanted to improve both the functionality of the space and also the energy efficiency of the house.
I carried out an assessment of the property and provided a report detailing specification options for a range of fabric improvements that were suitable for a traditionally constructed property. I also made recommendations for remediating defects.
Although the original layout of the staircases did not seem to be an efficient use of space, options for relocating them to create a larger first-floor bathroom did not balance spatial, experiential and heritage qualities / characteristics sufficiently to justify a change. The insertion of a ground floor WC also felt like to much of a compromise in spatial and heritage terms, so taking the approach of minimal intervention and working with the existing building, I proposed a simple alternative that involved increasing the bathroom size at the expense of a double bedroom (making it a single bedroom), and adding a WC and shower to the basement. This is now being taken forward by the client.
